Lao Tzu, the founder and main representative of the Taoist , was honored as the first ancestor of Taoism and called “Tai Shang Lao Jun”. At the end of the Spring and Autumn Period,war broke out,  Lao Tzu abandoned his official position ,went back to seclusion and rode a green ox to the west. When he arrived at Hangu Pass in Lingbao, he left behind the book “Tao Te Ching”.

老子,道家学派创始人和主要代表人物,后被道教尊为始祖,称“太上老君”。春秋末年,天下大乱,老子弃官归隐,骑青牛西行。到灵宝函谷关时,留下《道德经》一书。

Lǎozi, dàojiā xuépài chuàngshǐ rén hé zhǔyào dàibiǎo rénwù, hòu bèi dàojiào zūn wèi shǐzǔ, chēng “tài shàng lǎo jūn”. Chūnqiū mònián, tiānxià dàluàn, lǎozi qì guān guīyǐn, qí qīng niú xīxíng. Dào líng bǎo hán gǔ guān shí, liú xià “dàodé jīng” yī shū.

 

Tao Te Ching is one of the most widely published books in the world. The Tao Te Ching has a profound influence on the development of Chinese philosophy, and its ideological core is naive dialectics. The Tao Te Ching advocates governance by inaction and not Competitive, emphasizing the principle that the extremes of things must be reversed.

《道德经》是全球文字出版发行量最大的著作之一。《道德经》对中国哲学发展具有深刻影响,其思想核心是朴素的辩证法。《道德经》主张无为而治和不与人争,强调物极必反之理。

“Dàodé jīng” shì quánqiú wénzì chūbǎn fāxíng liàng zuìdà de zhùzuò zhī yī.“Dàodé jīng” duì zhōngguó zhéxué fāzhǎn jùyǒu shēnkè yǐngxiǎng, qí sīxiǎng héxīn shì púsù de biànzhèngfǎ.“Dàodé jīng” zhǔzhāng wúwéi ér zhì hé bù yǔ rén zhēng, qiángdiào wùjíbìfǎn zhī lǐ.

  1. Shàngshànruòshuǐ, shuǐ shànlì wànwù ér bùzhē

上善若水,水善利万物而不争。

最厉害的人好像水一样。水善于滋润万物而不与万物相争。

The most powerful people are like water. Water is good at nourishing all things without competing with them.

 

  1. Zhì zhě bù yán, yán zhě bùzhī

知者不言,言者不知

有智慧的人不会说太多,说太多的人往往没有智慧。

Wise people don’t talk too much, and people who talk too much are often not wise.

 

  1. Zhīrén zhě zhì, zì zhì zhě míng

知人者智,自知者明

能了解他人的人聪明,能了解自己的人有智慧。

Those who understand others are clever, and those who understand themselves are wise.

  1. Dà yīn xī shēng, dà xiàng wúxíng

大音希声,大象无形

越好的音乐越悠远,越好的形象越飘渺。至美的乐音,至美的形象已经到了和自然融为一体的境界,反倒给人以无音、无形的感觉。

The most beautiful music, the most beautiful image has reached the realm of integration with nature, but it gives people a soundless and invisible feeling.

 

  1. Hébào zhī shù, shēng yú háomò; jiǔ céng zhī tái, qǐ yú lèi tǔ, qiānlǐ zhī xíng, shǐ yú zúxià

合抱之树,生于毫末;九层之台,起于累土,千里之行,始于足下

合抱的大树,生长于细小的幼苗;九层的高台,筑起于每一堆泥土;千里的远行,是从脚下第一步开始走出来的。

The hugged tree grows from tiny seedlings; the nine-story high platform is built from every pile of soil; the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step underfoot.
